Meta has added fundraising to Instagram Reels, allowing users to donate to over 1.5 million charities in over 30 countries around the world.
Reels’ fundraising was announced today as part of a series of updates commemorating Earth Day.
According to the announcement, several influencers are currently demonstrating the new fundraising features to raise awareness about environmental issues:
“And with Earth Day around the corner, Meta is collaborating with Dave Burd (aka Lil Dicky), Maggie Baird, Zyahna Bryant and other public figures to raise awareness about nonprofits tackling environmental issues like climate change and sustainability.”
Short-form videos have proven to be an effective way to raise funds for nonprofits and charitable causes in the past.
The short-form video has been used in some of the most well-known and successful fundraisers.
One of the most memorable examples is the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, which went viral on Facebook and led to the formation of Meta’s Social Impact team.

On Instagram, there’s a lot more information about fundraising
People can already use Instagram to raise money through feed posts, Stories, and live streams.
While the Instagram community has found creative ways to support nonprofits on Reels as well, there is now a dedicated way to do so.
Meta covers the donation processing fees, as it does with other fundraising options. As a result, all funds raised through Instagram Reels fundraisers go directly to the nonprofit.
According to a spokesperson for Meta, environmental protection is one of the top three causes that Facebook and Instagram users donate to:
“Globally, more than 4M people have donated over $150M to date through Facebook & Instagram Fundraisers to combat climate change and support environmental protection.”
Because the majority of donations made on Instagram in the last year were under $20 USD, every little bit counts.
The following are the top three causes that people donate to on Instagram:
- The well-being of children
- Humanitarian assistance
- Protection of the environment and animals
The Ocean Cleanup, World Wildlife Fund, and Sheldrick Wildlife Trust are the most popular environmental nonprofits on Instagram, based on the number of donors.
