
Instagram is introducing two new feeds and updating the app’s home feed with more content from accounts you don’t already follow.
Instagram is bringing back the chronological feed, which only contains content from followed accounts, to balance out the additional content you didn’t opt into seeing.
The other feed Instagram is introducing is similar to Twitter’s lists in that it allows you to curate the accounts whose content you want to see.

Updates To Instagram’s Home Feed
The Instagram app will have three types of feeds in an update that is expected to be released soon and is already in testing for a small number of users.
The three feeds are as follows:
- Home: This is the Instagram experience you’re used to, where content is ranked algorithmically based on how likely you are to be interested in specific posts.
- Favorites: This feed contains content from accounts that you want to keep an eye on so you don’t miss anything. You can customize which accounts appear in this feed, similar to how Twitter lists work.
- Following: This is a list of posts made solely by accounts you follow.
The two new feeds are previewed in a video posted by Instagram’s Head of Instagram, Adam Mosseri, and details about changes to the existing home feed are shared.
According to Mosseri, these changes are being made to help people feel good about the time they spend in the app.
He believes that giving people the ability to customize their Instagram feed will result in a more positive experience.
At the same time, the main feed will deviate further from the content that people have chosen to receive.
This is stated as Mosseri describes the new ‘Following’ feed. He says (italics mine):
“… The third we’re calling ‘Following’ — and it’ll be a chronological list of posts just from accounts you follow, because Home is going to have more and more recommendations over time.”
That’s good news for content discovery because it opens up the possibility for accounts to reach out to more people and build an audience.
However, it may result in a worse experience if people suddenly discover that they aren’t getting enough of the content they want to see when they open the Instagram app.
At the very least, they’ll be able to quickly switch between Favorites and Following feeds via an easily accessible drop-down menu.
As previously stated, these are already in testing for some users. Mosseri anticipates that the full experience will be available in the first half of this year.
