Twitter Confirms That It Is Developing An Edit Button

The company confirms that a long-awaited edit button is coming to Twitter, but it will first go through a round of testing with premium users.

Twitter has confirmed that it is working on an edit button, which will be tested with a small group of users in the coming months.

This was announced late last night, after Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who is now Twitter’s largest shareholder, made headlines for polling his followers on whether or not an edit button should be added.

The results were, as expected, overwhelmingly in favor of an edit button.

Musk was recently appointed to Twitter’s board of directors after purchasing 9.2% of the company’s stock on Monday.

His position may allow him to have a say in whether or not new features are included. Twitter, on the other hand, claims that an edit button was already in the works.

While Twitter acknowledges the poll, which received over four million votes, it claims to have been working on an edit feature since last year.

Before making the edit button available to everyone, Twitter will test it with its Twitter Blue premium subscribers.

Twitter Blue Labs allows the company to experiment with new features while also providing additional value to its premium members.

Twitter can use testing to figure out how to implement an edit button in a way that has the least negative impact on the user experience.

There are several variables to consider, including:

  • How long will users have to edit a tweet?
  • How many times can a tweet be edited?
  • How will other users know when a tweet has been edited?

Allowing users to edit historical tweets from previous years could be argued against. A five-minute window in which a newly published tweet can be edited, on the other hand, might be more reasonable.

All of this will be determined during the testing phase, which Twitter says will start in the coming months.
