Twitter clarifies how it limits the visibility of duplicate content that is widely shared on the platform.
Twitter’s policy against duplicate content, which was first implemented in 2020, has never been adequately communicated until now.
It was unclear what constitutes a violation or what happens in the event of one.
Twitter has now created a help page that answers many of the frequently asked questions.
Twitter’s policy, dubbed “copypasta,” prohibits the copying and pasting of blocks of text, images, or a combination of content into tweets.
If this policy is broken, content may be hidden from other users or become ineligible for promotion.
Severe violations may result in account deletion or permanent account suspension.
User Experiences Can Be Manipulated by Duplicate Tweets
According to Twitter’s rules and policies page:
“Copypasta or duplicate content is a tactic for propagating a message, and is used for a wide range of purposes, it can be repetitive, spammy, and disruptive to people’s experience on Twitter.”
Copypasta can be used to artificially boost content, suppress information, or manipulate the app’s trends and top search results, according to Twitter.
The following types of content will be restricted under the new rules:
- An individual account or multiple accounts tweet identical or nearly identical posts.
- Duplicate or copy-pasted tweets, including those that mention users or use hashtags with identical content, disrupt user experiences.
It will have no effect on retweeted posts or content that has been copied and pasted with unique commentary or reaction.
Tweets that directly quote copied text will be unaffected as well.
Copypasta Tweets Will Have Limited Visibility
Duplicative tweets will be restricted in the same way that those deemed abusive, spammy, or in violation of applicable laws are.
This type of content’s visibility on social media is limited by:
- Tweets are no longer eligible for amplification in top search results or trends.
- Not recommend tweets to non-followers of the author.
- In replies, downranking tweets.
- Email or in-product recommendations exclude tweets and accounts.
These tweets will remain visible to Twitter users who follow the author directly.
