Meta is doubling down on Facebook Reels as a competitor to TikTok by bringing the app to more than 150 countries and adding editing and monetization features.
With over a billion active users, TikTok is a powerhouse in terms of customer reach for regular users and brands.
Every day, millions of short videos reach people all over the world.
It’s also useful for managing brands and advertising with sponsored ads.
Meta created Instagram Reels in 2020 and Facebook Reels in September 2021 in countries such as the United States, Canada, Mexico, and India in an attempt to cash in on the trend.
Meta is expanding its reels to 150 countries around the world to help users create new and interesting content, earn money, and connect with audiences.
Reels of TikTok vs. Facebook
TikTok was first released in China in 2016, but it wasn’t available on iOS or Android until 2017. It didn’t gain popularity until it merged with musical.ly in 2018. As a result, it became a global app with existing videos and users.
TikTok is a video-sharing app that allows users to create and share videos. To make the video more interesting or marketable, people add filters and other embellishments. It covers a wide range of topics, including home improvement, comedy, conspiracy theories, and other topics.
Users can follow creators, leave comments on videos, like videos, and change videos by swiping up or down. Brands can create TikToks for sponsored ads or have their own TikTok account for organic reach.
Reels have a similar interface, but it includes several adoptions, with more on the way. Overlay ads, banner ads, and sticker ads are some of the ad types available. Meta is experimenting with a revenue model for creators in which fans can buy stars for their favorite creators.
Enhanced Editing Capabilities
Meta is also introducing new editing tools, such as:
- People can remix an existing and publicly shared reel by creating a new reel next to it.
- Reels with a 60-second duration
- Draft reels are made.
- Video clipping allows creators to experiment with different formats for live and long-form content more easily.
Is it possible for Reels to compete with Tik Tok?
Because of Facebook and Instagram’s massive reach, Meta will be able to reach far more people with Reels than TikTok. The question is whether people will take advantage of this or stick with TikTok.
Will they be willing to use Reels or just rehash their existing TikToks for the new program? Facebook’s demographic is older than TikTok’s, so will they be willing to use Reels or just rehash their existing TikToks for the new program?
