Instagram is expanding a feature that filters out sensitive content, which could have an impact on some accounts’ reach.
Users can control how much sensitive content appears in Search, Reels, Accounts You Might Follow, Hashtag Pages, and In-Feed Recommendations by going to the Settings menu and selecting Sensitive Content Control.
Sensitive Content Control was first implemented in July 2021, but only for the Explore feed.
If enough people use Sensitive Content Control, your post’s reach may be reduced if you publish content that Instagram considers sensitive.’
Here’s more information on how the feature works and what content is affected.
Content Control identifies and removes content that could jeopardize community safety
Instagram defines sensitive content as “posts that don’t necessarily break our rules, but may be upsetting to some people.”
This includes, for example:
- Violence, such as people fighting, may be depicted in the content.
- Pictures of people wearing see-through clothing, for example, may contain content that is sexually explicit or suggestive.
- Content that encourages the use of regulated products such as tobacco or vaping products, adult products and services, or prescription drugs.
- Content that could be used to advertise or depict cosmetic procedures.
- Content that could be attempting to sell products or services based on health claims, such as a weight-loss supplement.

Optional Content Controls
Controlling sensitive content on Instagram can be done in three ways.
The choices are as follows:
- Standard: This is the default setting, which restricts certain types of content.
- More: This allows users to choose whether or not they want to see more sensitive content.
- Less: Restricts sensitive content more than the default setting.
Users under the age of 18 are not permitted to use the “more” option.
