You Can Use Twitter’s DM Search To Find Messages By Keyword

Twitter is introducing the ability to use keywords to search for messages in your DM inbox.

The direct message search bar on Twitter is getting an upgrade, with the much-desired ability to search for DMs by entering keywords.

This update to Twitter’s DM search is now available on the iOS and Android apps, as well as web browsers.

If you believe that searching by keyword is how a search bar should work, you’re likely to find someone who disagrees.

However, since its launch in 2019, Twitter DM search has lacked the basic functionality of keyword searching.

Until now, Twitter users could only search for DMs by name, which was inconvenient if you had a long DM conversation with someone.

The ability to search for messages containing specific keywords would have been more valuable, as I noted when Twitter DM search was first announced.

Nearly three years after launching the first version of DM search, Twitter is finally delivering the functionality that users have been asking for.

Looking for Twitter Direct Messages (DMs) Twitter’s DM search by keyword now works as expected.

Simply use a mobile app or a web browser to access your DM inbox and begin typing a keyword.

As you type, results will appear, displaying messages that contain the word or phrase you’ve entered.

This is demonstrated in the following Twitter example:

While this is an improvement over Twitter’s previous DM search limitations, it still lacks the ability to search for historical DMs.

Only messages sent and received in 2020 are included in the search results.

You won’t be able to use the built-in search bar to quickly locate a DM from earlier in your Twitter career.

This update should suffice for locating Twitter messages sent in the last couple of years.
