{"id":2620,"date":"2022-03-17T14:06:16","date_gmt":"2022-03-17T14:06:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/seopolarity.com\/blog\/?p=2620"},"modified":"2022-03-17T14:06:21","modified_gmt":"2022-03-17T14:06:21","slug":"is-tabbed-content-a-google-ranking-factor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/seopolarity.com\/blog\/is-tabbed-content-a-google-ranking-factor\/2022\/","title":{"rendered":"Is Tabbed Content A Google Ranking Factor?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In-page tabs and accordions are UI controls that divide content into logical sections to improve the user experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By navigating through each tab or clicking to reveal a new section of text from the accordion, page visitors can switch between different views.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But how does this affect the SEO value of content that isn&#8217;t visible until the user navigates to it and reveals it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many people have wondered whether Google still uses hidden content in its ranking algorithm over the years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, let&#8217;s see what happens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-claims-hidden-content-influences-rankings\">The Claims: &#8220;Hidden&#8221; Content Influences Rankings<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The question is whether Google devalues or even ignores content that is hidden from the user using UX\/design elements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s important to note that we&#8217;re not talking about using CSS to position text off-screen or hiding it against the background, for example, in order to manipulate the algorithm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tabs and accordions, like their namesakes from the old world of paper filing, are used to organize page content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/seopolarity.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/tabs-and-accordion-files-1024x576.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2621\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seopolarity.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/tabs-and-accordion-files-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/seopolarity.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/tabs-and-accordion-files-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/seopolarity.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/tabs-and-accordion-files-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/seopolarity.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/tabs-and-accordion-files-1536x864.png 1536w, https:\/\/seopolarity.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/tabs-and-accordion-files-390x220.png 390w, https:\/\/seopolarity.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/tabs-and-accordion-files.png 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Tabs are usually arranged horizontally on web pages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Without having to load a new page each time, the user can move from tab to tab to reveal new content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Users can click to open each section of an accordion, which typically closes the others as the new section opens (but not always, which can result in a very long page of text).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tabs and accordions can be used for a variety of purposes, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The content of the <strong>FAQs<\/strong>.<\/li><li>For accessibility, use <strong>video transcripts or descriptive content<\/strong>.<\/li><li><strong>User reviews<\/strong> that can be truncated but still allow users to &#8220;Read More.&#8221;<\/li><li>Getting around <strong>complicated topics<\/strong>.<\/li><li>On a <strong>single page, categorize<\/strong> different types of information.<\/li><li><strong>And there&#8217;s a lot more.<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tabbed Content As A Ranking Factor: The Evidence<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The following is what Google&#8217;s Webmaster Guidelines say about hidden content in tabs:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cMake your site\u2019s important content visible by default. Google is able to crawl HTML content hidden inside navigational elements such as tabs or expanding sections.<\/p><p>However, we consider this content less accessible to users, and believe that you should make your most important information visible in the default page view.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>In a 2013 response to a viewer&#8217;s question, &#8220;How does Google treat hidden content that becomes visible when clicking a button?&#8221; Matt Cutts addressed the issue from a webspam standpoint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He believes that using an accordion or tabbed structure that allows users to hide and reveal content has good usability benefits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You won&#8217;t get any spam actions as long as you don&#8217;t try to deceive people with hidden, over-optimized text.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This indicates that Google does not consider tabs or accordions that are properly structured and formatted to be hidden text.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Is the content in those tabs, however, given the same weight as the content on the page that is always visible?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2014, Google&#8217;s John Mueller was questioned about reports that Google ignores content that isn&#8217;t visible to a user unless they click on a &#8220;click to expand&#8221; button when rendering pages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mueller said,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201c\u2026I think we\u2019ve been doing something similar for quite a while now, where if we can recognize that the content is actually hidden then we\u2019ll just try to discount it a little bit. We kind of see that it\u2019s still there, but the user doesn\u2019t see it. Therefore, it\u2019s probably not something that\u2019s critical for this page.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>He clarified that he was referring to both accordions and tabs, and suggested that if you want your content to be indexed, make it visible to users.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tabbed Content As A Ranking Factor: The Evidence<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>That advice on tabbed content, aside from the Webmaster Guidelines excerpt above, is quite old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Google&#8217;s view of what constitutes a great user experience has shifted over time, especially when it comes to mobile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2016, Google&#8217;s Gary Illyes responded to a tweet asking if content in in-page elements like accordions was devalued on mobile, and his answer was straightforward:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cNo, in the mobile-first world content hidden for UX should have full weight.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Mueller recently confirmed that tabbed and accordion content is not devalued in a Google Webmaster Central office hours episode from March 2020. When questioned:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cIn the mobile-first indexing world, will the hidden content behind tags and accordions still be devalued \u2014 for example, because there is a lower chance it\u2019ll be seen by a user?\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Mueller responded:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cNo. Specifically, when it comes to content on mobile pages, we do take into account anything that\u2019s in the HTML.<\/p><p>So if there is something there that might be visible to users at some point, we will include that in the indexing. That\u2019s completely normal.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Our Opinion On Tabbed Content As A Ranking Factor<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Content is a ranking factor, and allowing users to choose what and when they see content does not devalue it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It would be the same if you tabbled the content as if you didn&#8217;t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, does it really matter if the content is tabbed or not?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We know that Google gives tabbed content the same weight as the rest of the text on the page when using mobile-first indexing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The most important aspect is the content, not the fact that it is tabbed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are a variety of ways to &#8220;hide&#8221;
