Let&#8217;s see what happens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-claims-gov-links-are-a-ranking-factor\">Claims:.gov Links Are a Ranking Factor<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"h-claims-gov-links-are-a-ranking-factorgovernment-websites-publish-a-wide-range-of-important-information-to-which-other-websites-link-statistics-and-reports-vital-health-and-financial-data-impactful-announcements-and-so-on\">Government websites publish a wide range of important information to which other websites link \u2013 statistics and reports, vital health and financial data, impactful announcements, and so on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can bet there are strict checks and balances in place to ensure the accuracy of that information before it&#8217;s published on a government website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A significant amount of money is invested in government communications and publishing to support the creation of high-quality content that is accessible to all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once it&#8217;s out there, government-supplied content is widely shared by mainstream media, social media users, various organizations, and so on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For these reasons, people \u2013 and search engines \u2013 regard government websites as reasonably trustworthy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So having a government agency link to you and say they trust you have to be huge. It must be far more significant than a link from a local nonprofit or a blogger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Read <a href=\"https:\/\/fileproinfo.com\/blog\/instagram-statistics-that-will-matter-for-marketers-in-2022\/2021\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Instagram Statistics that Will Matter for Marketers in 2022<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Evidence for.gov Links as a Ranking Factor<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Why do people value.gov links so highly?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, just today, I discovered these gems from services that sell them:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>&#8220;Having trusted and highly regarded websites, such as government and academic learning websites, linking back to your own site will help you achieve a higher trust rank.&#8221;<\/li><li>&#8220;Because of the extremely high authority of.edu\/.gov sites, these backlinks will increase the authority of your site and your Google Ranks.&#8221;<\/li><li>&#8220;These links carry a lot of weight in terms of ranking.&#8221; Links from high authority sites like these boost the authority of your domain.&#8221;<\/li><li>&#8220;Every link will be DOFOLLOW, and the rank juice will pass.&#8221;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Please give me some of that &#8220;rank juice.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;re looking for evidence that.gov links will boost your Google rankings, there&#8217;s plenty of it. However, consider the sources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Evidence Against.gov Links As A Ranking Factor<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This one was debunked a long time ago and has been disproven numerous times since. But first, let&#8217;s go back to 2008 and see what Matt Cutts had to say about.gov links:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cTypically, our policy is: a link is a link, is a link; wherever that link\u2019s worth is, that is the worth that we give it. Some people ask about links from DMOZ, links from .edu or links from .gov, and they say: \u201cIsn\u2019t there some sort of boost? Isn\u2019t a link better if it comes from a .edu?\u201d The short answer is: no, it is not. It is just .edu links tend to have higher PageRank, because more people link to .edu\u2019s or .gov\u2019s.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The most important question you should ask yourself (and your in-house or outsourced SEO team) about any given link isn&#8217;t what the domain authority is or anything else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The main question is, &#8220;Does it make sense for this entity to link to this specific piece of content?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Is it appropriate for the United States Department of Agriculture to link to our plumbing company&#8217;s blog post about the advantages of different types of faucets? At the very least, Google isn&#8217;t going to dismiss that one right away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">.gov Links as a Ranking Factor: What We Think<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"480\" height=\"395\" src=\"https:\/\/seopolarity.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/definitely-not.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1961\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seopolarity.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/definitely-not.png 480w, https:\/\/seopolarity.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/definitely-not-300x247.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>A link is a Furthermore, links are a well-known Google ranking factor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the specific question we are investigating here is whether.gov links, in particular, are more powerful or, in some way, distinct from other types of links.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The answer to that question is unequivocal no.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The value of a.gov link is simply that it is a link, and if you&#8217;re trying to game the system based on the TLD, that link may be worthless to you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When it comes to links, Google has a plethora of other more impactful, meaningful signals to consider.
