The goal is to make it easy for users to compare search results and to quickly click away from a web page and visit a competing web page.

The new Google experimental feature is a side panel search, one of two experiments that make Google’s search results pages (SERPs) persistent.

The presence of something is said to be persistent when it lasts longer than normal or what is expected.

Both experiments show Google moving toward a more persistent search experience that keeps search results pages visible and accessible even when the user is on another web page.

The experimental side panel search results make it easier for searchers to navigate away from a website and onto a competitor’s website.

Google Search Experiments: Two New Experiments

Two search experiments were announced:

Journeys

Side Panel Search

Google Maps Journeys

Journeys are the name of the first experiment. The feature collects and groups previous searches on a related topic. The feature is similar to a search history archive, but it groups past searches by topic, making it easier to find specific searches related to a topic.

The goal is to make it simple for Google users to use Google for topic research.

Google describes the feature as a method of grouping web pages:

“If you’ve been researching a trip to Yosemite for the past few weeks, Journeys will cluster all the pages you’ve visited related to Yosemite so you can easily view them without having to sift through your browsing history.

You’ll also see related search suggestions so you can continue planning your trip right there.”

Chrome Journeys data is not sent back to Google; instead, it is stored locally.

Google says that in future versions, they may consider expanding it so that Journeys can be accessed across multiple devices.

Read Important SEO KPIs You Need To Be Tracking For Success.

Google Sidebar Search

The second experimental feature is a three-step process that begins with a standard Google search and ends with a website click.

The third component is a side panel that opens on the left side to reveal the search results that the user navigated away from just a moment ago.

A user can scroll up and down through the search results while remaining on the website using the Chrome browser’s side panel.

If the user finds another search result more appealing, they can quickly navigate away from the website they had previously navigated to from search by clicking from the sidebar.

A Simple Way to Return to Google Search

The experimental side panel search result eliminates the need to return to Google’s search results by clicking the back button.

Side panel searching enables users to compare the page they are on to other pages in the search results and click back and forth between them more easily.

Persistent Search Results on Google’s Side Panel

According to Google, the new experimental feature will assist users in comparing search results:

“To make it easier to compare search results and find what you’re looking for more quickly in Chrome, we’re experimenting with a new side panel in the Chrome OS Dev channel, so you can view a page and the search results at the same time.

This lets you view a page right in your main browser window without needing to navigate back and forth or losing your search results. The goal of this experiment is to explore how Chrome can better help users easily compare results…”

Screenshot of a Normal Search Result

A screenshot of a typical search result from which a user chooses a web page to visit is shown below.

How to Use Persistent Side Panel Search

A screenshot of a user visiting a web page is shown below. Rather than leaving Google’s search engine results pages (SERPs) after clicking away to another website, the Google search results are kept in a side panel or grouped by topic in a Journeys panel.

The side panel search may be beneficial to sites that are not ranked first, as it may help spread search traffic around.

It remains to be seen whether this makes users less likely to stay on a website and explore because this is a new experiment and there is likely no data to understand how this may affect user behavior on websites.

Need help with our free SEO tools?
