Google Search no longer supports the Internet Explorer 11 web browser, as stated by the company: “We did the math. It’s finally time.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Malte Ubl, a Google software engineer, announced the news on Twitter, noting that it is especially good news for the developer community:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To be clear, “ended support” does not imply that Google will no longer be accessible through Internet Explorer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rather, Google will serve a trimmed-down version of the search engine that can only return basic results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Ended support” means that none of Google’s new features will be compatible with Internet Explorer in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That’s bad news for the 1.32 percent of the market that uses Internet Explorer on a desktop computer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, as the Google engineer points out, it is not justifiable to continue developing features for such a small market segment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We did the math,” most likely refers to a calculation of the resources required to support IE11 versus the potential losses incurred as a result of those users not receiving the full Google experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

WordPress made a similar assessment and discontinued support for Internet Explorer 11 with the release of WordPress 5.8 in July.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These decisions are unlikely to have a significant impact on either company. considering Microsoft’s decision to discontinue Internet Explorer in July 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those who are still using IE will be forced to switch to a different platform sooner rather than later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Internet Explorer has been superseded by the Microsoft Edge browser, and no new version has been released since 2013. IE11, on the other hand, remained bundled with the Windows operating system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That will change with Windows 11, which will only include Microsoft Edge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Google is abandoning Internet Explorer, and the rest of the world will follow suit soon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
