Malte Ubl, a Google Software Engineer, reminded us that the desktop version of the page experience update will be released next month. As a reminder, he tweeted the following:
This was announced by Google in November, and it is expected to go live next month. The rollout will take a few months, beginning in February 2022 and concluding by the end of March 2022. Aside from the page needing to be mobile-friendly, this update will include all of the current signals of the mobile version of the page experience update.
Same Thresholds
To reiterate, the same metric thresholds will apply to desktops. As a result, the mobile thresholds will be the same as the desktop thresholds. “The same three Core Web Vitals metrics: LCP, FID, and CLS, and their associated thresholds will apply for desktop ranking,” according to the original blog post. In a tweet, Malte Ubl confirmed this, saying, “metric thresholds are the same as on mobile.”

Don’t expect drastic changes
Expect no drastic changes as a result of this rollout and this new Google update, according to Google. “While this update is intended to highlight pages that provide excellent user experiences, page experience remains one of many factors that our systems consider… Given this, sites should not expect drastic changes,” Google stated. We anticipate the same for the desktop rollout.
Search Console tools any day now
Google Search Console tools and reports will be updated to assist site owners in preparing for this update. “We are also planning to help site owners understand how their desktop pages are performing in terms of page experience by launching a Search Console report before desktop becomes a ranking signal,” Google said. So, these new tools and reports should be available any day now.
Mobile vs desktop
What elements will be included in this desktop version? With the exception of the mobile-friendliness requirement, which is self-evident, Google stated all of them. Here is a chart created by Google that shows the specific factors:
Why we care
As I previously stated, while I do not believe this page experience update will be a significant update in which tons of sites’ rankings will drastically change, those working to improve their page experience have primarily focused on their mobile pages. Now that your mobile pages are ready for this update, you can turn your attention to your desktop pages.
The new reports have not yet been released, but I am hopeful that they will be soon.
